UF Survey Research Center

Job Description
  • We are a huge department with the University of Florida. The Survey Lab has been doing telephone research since the late 1980s, and we’ve established a very competitive reputation as a research institution.
  • Various clients contract our work, and we do surveys on many subjects, from academic and business research to health care to neighborhood crime.
  • For most surveys, respondents do not know that we will be calling. Many people are suspicious, skeptical, or angry about the intrusion, and/or unwilling to participate.
  • It is our job to make sure we do everything in our power to assure them of our legitimacy and to convince them to do the research with us. This requires a polite, professional, and reassuring attitude at all times, and especially when they refuse - we must remember that WE are bugging them, not the other way around.
  • We enter into a contract with our clients that their research will be collected in an accurate and efficient manner. In terms of accuracy, this means that all questions must be read exactly as they appear on the screen - no abbreviating, no skipping questions, and no assuming answers. As for efficiency, you are expected to be dialing at all times when you are not conducting an interview, i.e., call a number, code its disposition, and call the next number-with no lag time in between calls.
  • We monitor you every shift so that we can recognize your strengths and make you aware of the areas that may need improvement.
  • We also call back all of your completed interviews to confirm that you actually did them and to find out if, according to the respondent, you did them well.
  • You are evaluated every week by the evaluation department on your dialing rates (how fast you are dialing numbers), your cooperation rates (completed interviews to refusals), monitoring reports, coding correctly (recording what happen for each call made), and your waste percentage (the amount of time you are not dialing or on a complete.)
  • As for attendance, you are expected to be here for the shifts you sign up for. If you can’t make it, you have five call-ins per semester. Proper documentation will excuse absences. However, failing to notify us that you will not be here for a scheduled shift is grounds for immediate termination.
  • General Interviewer $7.00/hr + seasonal bonus when offered
Spanish Interviewer $7.50/hr + seasonal bonus when offered
